It’s taken me way too long to draw one of my favorite new legacies. I feel like I’ve grown up with Renee, thanks to Batman: The Animated Series. I’m glad she got to make the jump to comics.

Okay hey let’s talk about this yeah

chartreuserewind:

Amanda Waller is seriously the only woman in comics I strongly identify with

She’s a plus-sized woman of color, just like I am! I’m nearly 6 feet tall and I don’t even bother with how much I weigh because I’m p much a fatty and I don’t give a shit

And when I first got into comics, I saw a lot of Suicide Squad panels featuring Amanda that really intrigued me! At first I thought maybe she was some sort of side character, only used in not even half an issue or something. After all, comics have quite the reputation for only featuring characters with the same body type over and over and over—especially women. Even characters like Big Barda who are supposed to break that mold end up drawn in the same template that everyone else gets; I mean check out the way she’s drawn here compared to how she’s drawn here. Maybe some artists are used to their particular template for drawing people? Maybe some aren’t familiar with the character? Maybe some think it’s not a big deal? Who knows. But seeing Amanda—nicknamed “The Wall”, just like the mean kids in elementary school used to call me—and getting to see her portrayed as a smart, powerful woman placed in charge of everything made me feel something that I’d never gotten to feel before when it comes to media.

It was like seeing someone I really know in a comic book instead of all these skinny white people jumping around and getting into wacky hijinks. And she was a badass. And she was respected. And the fact that her nickname was actually something that was used on me as a kid and meant to hurt my feelings made everything a thousand times better. I mean, she’s the Wall! She’s intimidating and scary and awesome and respected and it’s just fantastic!

But now, apparently, DC’s going in another direction. Everything’s newer, everything’s sexier, everything’s white cis male-er. And as a result, everything’s a lot better, right?

Oh, wait!!!

Nothing’s really changed, it’s just gotten a lot worse!!!!!!!!

DC’s taken away the one thing that looked like me, felt like me, made me feel like I was something important and not the butt of a joke

They’ve taken my inspiration

and made her just like everyone else.

And right now I just can’t deal with that and can’t comprehend why they would do that. She was fine the way she was.

I mean look at that quote I posted, chances are there’s quite a few people thinking “haha wow, now that she’s attractive that makes her a million times more interesting! I like her now!”

And those people might think it’s not a big deal to change the way she looks

but for me, it is most definitely a big deal

a huge big deal

the biggest of deals

I thought I could give this new DC a chance but I was really wrong and I feel stupid for even thinking I could in the first place

Seriously, fuck it. I’m totally done.

I spent over ten minutes yesterday talking to someone about how awesome Amanda Waller was, and a few in the store today debating picking up the first Suicide Squad page.
